“A global fresh water crisis is imminent”
Without free-flowing fresh water, we lose power, sanitation and essential ecosystem services. Demand for fresh water is outpacing supply and climate change poses a formidable threat to our existing freshwater resources.

How does fresh water affect you?

*13 gallons—amount of water in a human body
*15 gallons—amount of water a person drinks each month
*50 gallons—amount of water used indoors by one American every day
* 2-3 days—the amount of time the average human can live without water

What is fresh water worth to you?

The impacts of climate change on freshwater resources pose an enormous challenge for sustaining life everywhere on Earth.

What is lost there is truly felt here.

In many places—such as those where glaciers are melting quickly and rainfall patterns are changing—water may no longer be available when it is needed, worsening existing problems of water scarcity and decreased agricultural productivity.

In other places, there will be too much water, increasing incidences of water-borne diseases and floods.

“Kuber ready to sail again”

by ash on Aug.25, 2009, under Business & Industry

“Kuber ready to sail again”

Nine months after the November 26 Mumbai terror attacks, the ill-fated fishing boat Kuber is ready to set sail into the Arabian Sea from Porbandar.
With six crew members on board, boat owner Vinod Masani offered prayers on Saturday for the smooth sailing of Kuber.
Despite repeated efforts, Masani did not agree to speak in this regard. However, according to sources close to him, Kuber, which was to sail on Saturday, will now begin its journey from Porbandar coast on Sunday.
Post 26/11, Kuber was in the custody of security agencies investigating the terror attacks. After getting a clean cheat from them, Kuber was brought back to Porbandar on March 9 and since then it has remained anchored in the Porbandar jetty.
“In the last five months, more than Rs 5 lakh have been spent on the boat’s repair. All the preparations for sailing and fishing have been made and food-stuff, ice and fuel stock have been kept ready,” said sources.

The global economic downturn, combined with a drop in global trade, impacted Danish shipping and oil concern AP Moller Maerk’s profits in the first half of 2009, the group said. Turnover for the six month period of Jan to June, measured in dollars, declined by 25 per cent year on year to 22.7billion daollars while the congolomerate reported a net loss of 540 million dollars.

In the corresponding 2008 business period, the group posted a net profit of 2.4 billion dollars. The group that operates Maersk Line, the world’s biggest container shipper, said ship transports fell 7 per cent during the half year, while average freight rates were 30 per cent lower year-on-year. The group’s container fleet comprised 501 vessels, of which 247 were chartered. The outlook said there was “considerable uncertainty” relating to changes in the global economy and its possible effects on container freight rates, the exchange rate for the dollar and oil prices. For the entire year of 2009, the group expected a result in line with the first half-year.

The group was “financially strong” and had carried out cost-saving measures, chief executive Nils S Andersen said in a statement. AP Moller-Maersk Group operations include sea transport, offshore oil and gas activities and retail and shipyard operations. It recently said it would phase out its shipyard in Odense by 2012. Year-on-year, the oil price was 52 per cent lower, but production increased 8 per cent. The group has production facilities in Qatar, the Danish section of the North Sea, Britain and Algeria.

Protest staged against Shipping Corporaton of India

by ash on Aug.24, 2009, under Business & Industry

Indian seafarers are protesting against plans by state-owned Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) to outsource vessels and crew management, writes Anderimar Shipping News.
More than 200 workers, represented by the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF)-affiliated National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI), demonstrated outside the offices of the publicly-run Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) on 18 August. According to the SCI seafarers – many of whom have worked for the company for more than 20 years – fear the proposals will lead to widespread unemployment among the seafarers.
NUSI general secretary Abdulgani Serang, said: “The seafarers perform their duties under volatile conditions in the high seas. But it seems that SCI does not care about them. If the SCI insists on continuing with its decision to outsource work, seafarers and NUSI will stand up and agitate on a larger scale in the interests of the seafarers and their families”.
Last week, ITF says, a high court in Mumbai rejected the SCI’s attempt to prevent NUSI from mobilising against the plans; the court ruled that it was the right of the trade union to take action in opposition to the proposals.

Malaysian rescuers recovered the charred remains of nine Chinese sailors who went missing after an oil tanker caught fire after colliding with another vessel, a marine official said Sunday.

The bodies of two crew members trapped in the Liberian-registered Formasaproduct Brick were found Friday and another seven on Saturday, First Adm. Tan Kok Kwee of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency said.
The tanker was carrying more than 50,000 tons of naphtha from the United Arab Emirates to South Korea when a Britain-registered bulk carrier rammed into its rear late Tuesday in the Malacca Strait, one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.
Firefighters took more than 30 hours to put out the blaze.
Rescue efforts were hindered by rough sea conditions and salvage work to stabilize the ship, officials said.
Tan said there was no spillage and marine authorities would assess the damage before releasing the vessel.
Accidents in the Malacca Strait, which separates peninsular Malaysia from Indonesia’s Sumatra island, are rare even though some 70,000 vessels use the waterway annually. Traffic was not affected by the collision and fire.

Nine crew missing after collision

by ash on Aug.20, 2009, under Business & Industry

Nine crew members are missing from a Taiwaneese-owned oil tanker, which collided with another ship in the Malacca Strait off Malayasia.
The Formosa Product Brick was involved in a collision with a Greek-managed cargo ship and caught fire.Search efforts are continuing for the missing crew members, although it is possible the men were unable to abandon ship. The fire has been put out and Malaysian authorities say none of the 58,000 tonnes of naphtha being transported has spilt into the sea.
Sixteen crew members were rescued from the vessel travelling from the UAE to South Korea and have been taken to hospital. Both ships were heading in the direction of Singapore when the accident happened. The tanker is listing but officials say there is no immediate danger of it sinking.
At least 94,000 ships sail through the Malacca Straight each year, although accidents are rare.
In July, a Japanese foundation urged operators to give money to the Malacca Strait navigation safety fund to maintain navigational aids.
Yohei Sasakawa, chairman of the Nippon Foundation, predicted: “There is potential for an accident to happen. If it involves crude oil tankers there will be a major oil spill.”

A Mega project for Cochin Port

by ash on Aug.16, 2009, under Business & Industry

The Kochi port has ventured into the new and promising area of project cargo handling with it handling the biggest ever consignment weighing 725 tonnes.

The consignment is a reactor imported by BPCL-Kochi Refinery for its “vacuum gas oil hydro de-sulphurisation” unit. It is intended to ensure Euro III norms mandatory in the production of petroleum products at the refinery situated at Ambalamugal on the city’s outskirts.
Capacity augmentation

The 40-metre-long reactor, with a diameter of 5.3 metres, was built by China Forging Heavy Industries under the supervision of China Petroleum Technical Development Corporation Limited. BPCL-Kochi Refinery will augment its refining capacity by April 2010, which has important implications for the Kochi port too. It would mean more crude oil imports through the port.

The reactor was brought to the port in a general heavy lift carrier type vessel, m.v. Maria, which loaded the consignment from the Chinese port of Dalian. The vessel is equipped with three heavy lift cranes and is the first of its kind to call at the Kochi port. The vessel was berthed at Q3 berth at the Mattancherry wharf and the reactor has been unloaded directly on to a specialised barge for transportation through inland waterways up to Irumpanam and from there by road to the refinery at Ambalamugal.

The Mumbai-based firm MHTC Logistics has been awarded the work of transporting the reactor to the refinery.

Engineers India Ltd., New Delhi, specialising in refinery installations, is supervising the operation. The refinery would need to import 30 to 35 large units of heavy machinery for capacity augmentation. The Kochi port has promised to provide facilities for smooth unloading and transportation of such specialised and delicate project machinery. This new venture has put the Kochi port in the category of harbours specialised in handling such sensitive cargo.
